Siebel Community Survey

תמונה
If you had one place where you would easily find all the Siebel related content you needed, would you go there? My fellow bloggers and friends Bruce Daley of the Siebel Observer and Richard Napier of On Demand Education  and me have been putting our heads together and came up with something we think is a nice little idea. The idea is to bundle the wealth of information about Siebel CRM like blog posts, news, job listings, events, trainings, webinars, example code or forums into one Siebel 'super' site. Of course this is a big decision and we would not want to act without hearing the voice of the Siebel community. So please take a minute and fill in the survey . You will be asked about what Siebel related content you're looking for on the web and how difficult you feel it to find. have a nice day @lex

Siebel Open UI - Back to School Series

תמונה
Honestly, it has been a while since this time of the year meant 'back to school' for me. However, in my life - personally and professionally - school has never ended (and hopefully never will, just keep on learning). This is essentially true when you make a living with enterprise IT systems such as Siebel CRM. As we all know, Siebel CRM reached a new evolutionary step with Siebel Open UI. On this blog, we have been spreading the news about Open UI from the beginning and as we are getting close to the 100th post on this topic, it seems worthwhile to pause, take a step back and look at the big picture. A big picture... In the following weeks we will look at several aspects of Siebel Open UI from a 'back to school' perspective. The main topics of the series are as follows: Understand the Open UI architecture What Open UI does for you (and what not) Why you should learn CSS and JavaScript now To script or not to script? Guess what! A 'Hello World' physical renderer...

Siebel Open UI: As it Happened

תמונה
If you follow the evolution of Siebel CRM (and this blog), you sure haven't missed Open UI . The latest patch set for IP 2013 bears the number 10 which makes it only 2 months to go for a full year since the last Innovation Pack. Sure you know that IP 2014 is in the making and there will be a lot to tell the round table as soon as it is generally available. In the meantime, we witness that IP 2013 and Open UI get some good coverage inside and outside Oracle. Today I would like to point out some interesting blogs, articles and news on Open UI - just as it happened. Kudos to all people who are willing to sacrifice some of their private time to share these valuable tidbits of information to make Open UI a success. Blogs of Note I am glad that the blogosphere is steadily picking up Open UI. You should bookmark Oracle's Jeroen Burgers blog " Oracle Implementation Advisor ". He recently published great articles such as on smooth view transitions and worked with fellow blog...

Siebel Nostalgia: 5 Years Ago

תמונה
It has become a habit of mine to provide you with some 'blasts from the past' from time to time. This is not because I have grown lazy (believe me, there's a lot of writing these days ;-) but to serve the 'younger' generation of Siebel Essentials followers who might not have had the opportunity to read all the posts (does anyone ever scroll down that far to the blog archive?). 5 years can make a big difference in the IT world and there's much that becomes obsolete. But when I was looking for a nice article from July 2009, I had a hard time deciding which one I should elicit for a re-post. So I thought I let you pick and choose from a list of well-ripened articles from the summer of 2009 and let you decide which you like best. I picked the ones which are still relevant today (most probably). What about some interesting arguments for good ol' EAI Siebel Adapter ? A classic: CRLF in eScript . Passing arguments from Commands to Business Services . Everything yo...

Turtle Shell, Bones and Scripts

On a quite regular basis I come across discussions or articles about the Chinese translation of "Oracle" (i.e. the company I work for). The Chinese Oracle logo some years ago. (Image source: sysdba blog ) A Chinese student once translated the characters ??? to me as "Turtle Shell", "Bone" and "Script". At first this is slightly odd to the Western mind but when you do a bit more research you find articles and translations which simply refer to this phrase as "Oracle" (in the sense of the ancient foreseers). In addition, the sages of the internet explain that in ancient China, records of divination and deeds were carved in tortoise shells or other animal bones as a means of storing information, hence the other translation "Oracle Bones". There you have it: This is an ancient form of database. So the Chinese Oracle logo does not only mean "Oracle" per se but also refers to Oracle's flagship product, the database. ...

The Death Match That Never Happened - Siebel vs. Salesforce

תמונה
As a follower of news and articles revolving the Siebel world, you might have stumbled upon the Fortune article titled " Siebel v Salesforce — Lessons from the Death of a Tech Goliath " written by former Siebel Systems executive Bruce Cleveland . Despite the somewhat misleading title which suggests that Siebel is dead ( which it is clearly not ), I enjoyed reading the article and following the discussion it spawned. In the article, Bruce confronts the "nice tale" that David Salesforce defeated Goliath Siebel in the first decade of this century. Bruce argues, and I go 100% with him, that Siebel Systems was definitely on its knees between 2001 and 2004 due to a global recession but it didn't share the same market segment with the new player in the CRM SaaS market, Salesforce.com. Image source: Wikipedia I joined Siebel Systems in 2001 and witnessed how its upper management tried to avoid the unavoidable. Imagine, you have to go full stop from being the fastest gro...
